Benefits

The following description of our various Funds pertains primarily to 1199SEIU members in hospitals and nursing homes New York City, Long Island and the northern suburbs. In the past decade, the Union has grown tremendously--through new organizing and by merging with a number of smaller SEIU healthcare locals in the upstate New York region, Massachusetts, Maryland and DC, and by organizing new sectors, especially in home healthcare. Most of these newer areas and sectors are not covered by all of our Funds, for various historical, political and economic reasons. There are important exceptions: for example, many if not most are now covered by our Training and Upgrading Funds.
 
Hopefully, within a year, every 1199SEIU member in all Divisions and Health Systems will be able to access their complete benefit information online.
 

1199SEIU members enjoy one of the most comprehensive benefit packages in the nation. These benefits – including health, pension, training, job security and child care - are provided through the 1199SEIU Family of Funds, which are funded through employer contributions.

Health Benefits
More than 200,000 members of 1199SEIU have won comprehensive healthcare coverage—hospitalization, doctor's visits, dental and vision care, prescription drugs, etc.—with no or minimal out-of-pocket expenses for themselves and their families. In all, the Benefit Funds cover more than 400,000 lives.

Pension Benefits
The 1199SEIU Pension Funds serve over 200,000 members—primarily in New York City and its Long Island and northern suburbs—and remains the model for what we want to achieve for every 1199SEIU member.

Education, Training & Job Security Benefits
These benefits are aimed at helping our members earn high school, college and advanced education degrees, as well as train them for upgraded skills in a constantly changing work environment. Many members are also eligible for placement services and extended benefits if they are laid off from their jobs.

Child Care Benefits
This benefit is a unique program that helps thousands of Union families with a wide menu of programs for our children from birth through college—for day care and after school care, mentoring, camps and holiday programs and other activities.
